Best Laptop in 2023

The brand-new Dell XPS 15 OLED, which starts at $1,299 (with the OLED model beginning at $2,199), bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor, the Dell XPS 15 2022, which, in turn, shared a similar design with its predecessor. Beyond some internal upgrades, we find ourselves looking at a laptop that seems quite familiar.
However, this familiarity isn't necessarily a drawback, especially when considering that the latest iteration of the XPS 15 OLED continues to rank among the finest laptops and top Windows laptops available.

The major shift for the 2023 XPS 15 OLED lies in its incorporation of the latest 13th Gen Intel Core CPUs and Nvidia GeForce RTX 40-series laptop GPUs. Furthermore, it offers the option of configuring with an Intel Arc graphics card. Aside from these significant updates, it retains the same attractive features as before, including a stunning 3.5K OLED display (for those willing to invest in the upgrade), a generous selection of ports, and ample power for everyday tasks and gaming.

While the new Dell XPS 15 OLED might appear to be a modest update at first glance, it remains a dependable Windows laptop with very few shortcomings. In this review, I will elucidate why this is the case.

Dell XPS 15 : DESIGN

The latest Dell XPS 15 maintains the timeless design of its predecessors. This laptop exudes an air of sophistication with its finely crafted aluminum chassis, presenting a slim and stylish profile. Whether you're in the office, at home, or your favorite café, it seamlessly blends in.

Measuring at 13.57 x 9.06 x 0.71 inches and weighing up to 4.23 pounds, the XPS 15 is effortlessly portable. Its sturdy construction and slim form factor make it a pleasure to handle.

With the exception of the subtle Dell logo adorning its silver lid, the laptop embraces a minimalist aesthetic. The sleek black interior beautifully complements the silver exterior. Front-facing speakers frame the keyboard, and the narrow bezels generously expand the screen real estate.

While I appreciate the overall design of the XPS 15, I must note that opening the laptop can be a bit challenging due to the absence of a lip on its lid—an ongoing quibble I've had with the XPS series. Thankfully, once opened, the lid proves to be both firm and easy to manipulate. It remains steady and doesn't emit any bothersome creaks, regardless of how much you handle the laptop. However, I do wish that the XPS 15 were more user-friendly when it comes to opening it up.

Dell XPS 15 : Display

One of the standout features of this laptop is its impressive 15.6-inch 3.5K OLED display, which operates at a smooth 60Hz refresh rate.

In my assessment of the XPS 15's screen, I was genuinely captivated by its ability to faithfully reproduce the rich and vibrant colors found in the second trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. I found the depiction of sepia-toned scenes, reminiscent of classic comic book aesthetics, particularly noteworthy. Even amidst a plethora of vivid hues displayed on the screen, I encountered no difficulties discerning the content.

Our rigorous laboratory tests corroborated my qualitative findings. Our measurements revealed that the XPS 15 achieves an average brightness level of 371.2 nits. While this falls just shy of the Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Ultra's 378 nits, it notably trails behind the MacBook Pro 16-inch, which boasts a dazzling 446 nits of brightness.

Regarding color representation and precision, the XPS 15's display impressively covered 194.7% of the sRGB color gamut and 137.9% of the more demanding DCI-P3 color space, although ideally, figures closer to 100% are preferred for both metrics. This observation aligns with my personal experience, as the XPS 15 tends to produce vivid and exaggerated colors. In contrast, while the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra (121.6% / 86.2%) and MacBook Pro 16-inch (118.2% / 83.7%) scored lower in this assessment, they exhibited superior color accuracy.

In the Delta-E color accuracy examination (where 0 signifies perfection), the XPS 15 OLED received a commendable score of 0.24, placing it in proximity to the MacBook Pro's score of 0.21 but falling slightly behind the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra's remarkable score of 0.15.

While the XPS 15 OLED's display may not match the competition in terms of color accuracy, some individuals may appreciate the vibrant and exaggerated colors it delivers. I personally find myself in that camp, as I thoroughly enjoyed the visually striking and colorful content displayed on the screen.

DELL XPS 15 : Ports

While the XPS 15 may not boast an extensive array of ports, it offers a sufficient selection for the majority of users.

Similar to its predecessor, this model includes three USB-C ports, a full-sized SD card slot, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a Kensington lock for added security.

And if the built-in options don't quite meet your connectivity needs, Dell generously includes a USB-A and Ethernet adapter with the XPS 15, ensuring that you have additional options at your disposal.

DELL XPS 15 : Audio

Much like its predecessor, the 2023 Dell XPS 15 continues to impress with its audio capabilities. Equipped with two 2.5-watt woofers and two 1.5-watt tweeters, this laptop delivers a robust and resonant sound that retains its clarity even at high volume levels. The audio experience is enhanced by excellent separation between lows, mids, and highs, ensuring that even the most subtle nuances in sound are faithfully reproduced. Notably, the often problematic bass output of laptop speakers doesn't disappoint with our Dell XPS 15 review unit.

In a real-world test, Opeth's "Blackwater Park" album retained all its sonic potency when played through the laptop's speakers, faithfully capturing the band's distinctive fusion of intensity and subtlety. Likewise, podcasts like Brandon Sanderson's "Intentionally Blank" sounded remarkably clear and enjoyable. Furthermore, the XPS 15's speakers enhanced the gaming experience, with titles like Doom Eternal and Cyberpunk 2077 delivering immersive audio that added to the overall enjoyment of these games.

DELL XPS 15 : Performance

*Swift performance *Suitable for basic video editing tasks

The Dell XPS 15 OLED model we evaluated is equipped with a 13th generation Intel Core i7-13700H processor, an Nvidia RTX 4070 dedicated laptop GPU, 32GB of RAM, and a capacious 1TB SSD for storage.

Thanks to these impressive specifications, this laptop demonstrates exceptional performance capabilities. In my personal testing, the laptop remained unfazed even when confronted with a demanding workload, such as having more than 30 open browser tabs alongside a concurrent YouTube video playback.

In the Geekbench 5 benchmark, which assesses overall performance, the XPS 15 achieved a score of 1,880 in the single-core test and 12,478 in the multi-core test. These results place it slightly ahead of the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra, which recorded scores of 1,672 and 12,212, respectively, in the same test.

Now, how does the new XPS 15 compare to the latest MacBook Pro 16-inch model? The base version of Apple's premium 16-inch notebook features an M2 Pro chip with 12 CPU cores and 19 GPU cores, accompanied by 16GB of RAM. While we didn't conduct tests on this specific MacBook Pro model, we did evaluate a 16-inch MacBook Pro equipped with the same M2 Pro chip. However, the Apple-provided configuration included 32GB of RAM.

Taking these results into consideration, it's evident from the chart above that Apple's laptop outperforms both the XPS 15 OLED and the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra, achieving scores of 1,962 in the single-core test and an impressive 15,048 in the multi-core test. In our Handbrake video editing test, which involves the transcoding of a 4K video clip to 1080p, the Dell XPS 15 completed the task in 5 minutes and 1 second. This time is slightly quicker than the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra's performance (5 minutes and 26 seconds) but lags behind the MacBook Pro 16-inch by a minute (4 minutes and 3 seconds).

DELL XPS 15 : Gaming Performance

With its impressive specifications, the XPS 15 proves itself as a capable gaming laptop.

The Dell XPS 15 OLED (2023) review unit, shown in the image above, offers a versatile Windows laptop experience suitable for work, gaming, and even some light video editing. In my personal testing, I put the laptop through its paces with games like Doom Eternal, God of War (2018), and Cyberpunk 2077. Doom Eternal, known for its exceptional optimization, ran impressively between 85 and 100 frames per second at medium settings, maintaining smooth performance even during intense battles. God of War on PC remained in the 30 to 40 fps range, a performance similar to its performance on the PlayStation 4 Pro but slightly below the 60 fps threshold often desired by PC gamers. Cyberpunk 2077 managed to run respectably at 45 to 50 fps on medium settings, with performance varying depending on the on-screen action. While the Dell XPS 15 isn't marketed specifically as a gaming laptop, it certainly demonstrates its competence as a capable gaming machine.

In our laboratory testing, we conducted in-game benchmarks for Borderlands 3, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Sid Meier's Civilization VI. As illustrated in the chart above, all three games consistently performed well above 60 frames per second at a 1080p resolution on the XPS 15. These results clearly position the XPS 15's gaming performance ahead of that of the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra, which features an RTX 4050 Ti GPU.

But how does the XPS 15 compare to dedicated gaming laptops? As shown above, Dell's notebook outpaces the MSI Cyborg 15 in terms of frame rates. This outcome isn't entirely surprising, given that the latter sports an RTX 4050 laptop GPU compared to the XPS 15's RTX 4070. However, it's worth noting that larger and more expensive gaming laptops equipped with beefier GPUs, such as the Razer Blade 18, will easily surpass the XPS 15 in terms of gaming performance.

While the XPS 15 isn't marketed as a gaming laptop, it demonstrates its ability to compete effectively in the realm of low- to mid-range gaming laptops.

DELL XPS 15 : Keyboard | Touchpad

Typing on the XPS 15 was an absolute delight, thanks to its generously sized keyboard and the soft, textured carbon fiber that graced the palm rests. The keys were notably responsive and had a satisfying tactile feel, facilitating rapid typing that approached the speed I achieve on a full-sized PC keyboard. Likewise, the spacious touchpad provided ample room for navigation. It flawlessly recognized all my swipes and gestures, reliably guiding the cursor to precisely where I intended it to go, ensuring an effortless user experience.

The large and seamlessly smooth trackpad offered plenty of real estate to operate comfortably. It flawlessly detected all my gestures and maintained a velvety touch. Remarkably, despite its substantial size, I never accidentally activated it with unintended swipes.

DELL XPS 15 :Camera | Webcam

The XPS 15 retains the same 720p camera as its previous iteration, which is undeniably disappointing for those who frequently engage in video calls. This camera is unlikely to showcase your appearance in the most flattering light.

In our test photos, the resulting images appeared grainy and lacked vibrancy, even in a well-lit office environment. If you find yourself frequently participating in video calls, it's advisable to consider investing in one of the best external webcams to ensure a more presentable and visually appealing appearance.

DELL XPS 15 : Battery Life | Power

In terms of battery life, the 2022 XPS 15 OLED offered a commendable performance. Unfortunately, the 2023 model doesn't quite match up.

During the Tom's Guide battery test, which involves continuous web surfing at 150 nits of screen brightness, the XPS 15 managed to last for 8 hours and 58 minutes. This represents a noticeable decrease compared to last year's XPS 15 OLED, which achieved a longer runtime of 10 hours and 5 minutes. Moreover, it falls behind competitors like the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra, which achieved 10 hours and 1 minute, and the MacBook Pro 16-inch 2023, which impressively reached 16 hours and 37 minutes on the same test.

The Dell XPS 15 2023 doesn't bring about a groundbreaking overhaul compared to its predecessor. If you already own the previous model, there's little incentive to upgrade to this year's offering. That said, it remains an exceptional Windows laptop with its striking OLED display, superb keyboard, and swift performance for both work and play. If you're seeking a versatile Windows laptop that excels in various tasks, including work, gaming, and some light video editing, you won't be disappointed with this notebook.

For those who prefer Apple laptops, the MacBook Pro 16-inch or MacBook Pro 14-inch are excellent alternatives to consider. If you're looking for a more lightweight Windows laptop with comparable performance, the Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Ultra is a solid choice.

While it may be considered a modest update, the Dell XPS 15 OLED Panel 2023 exemplifies what makes the XPS 15 series Dell's answer to Apple's MacBooks. Whether seen as iterative or not, this laptop continues to shine as a brilliant computing solution.
